Getting to know the UNIX Operating SystemFreeBSD InformationFreeBSD is an advanced UNIX operating system that is developed and maintained by a large team of individuals. FreeBSD offers advanced networking, performance, security and compatibility features today which are still missing in other operating systems, even some of the best commercial ones. Last but not least, FreeBSD makes an ideal Internet or Intranet server. It provides robust network services, even under the heaviest of loads, and uses memory efficiently to maintain good response times for hundreds, or even thousands, of simultaneous user processes.[top] Why FreeBSDAfter long consideration and many interviews with other ISP's and Internet related service providers, we determined that FreeBSD was more robust and better equiped to handle multiple virtual hosts. Our software includes numerous changes to the FreeDSD kernel and programs so that Virtual Servers and Web Hosting operate autonomously and without conflict. Much time was taken in the engineering of our core OS modifications. As a result, our systems are capable of outperforming other systems which provide Virutal Servers. Our systems are also scalable so that we can provide new features as they become available.[top] UNIX (User) CommandsDocumentation on many common UNIX commands is available below. UNIX commands generally have the following form: "command -options filename". The options consist of a string of letters, usually one letter per option. In the documentation below square brackets ([]) indicate items that are optional for that command. You can find more documentation on specific commands and search the documentation by keyword here.
